Llms.txt Explained: Helping AI Find (and Trust) Your Home Services Website

The discovery landscape is changing quickly for home services brands. While traditional search engines like Google and Bing continue to be mainstays of a successful digital marketing strategy, the number of channels influencing your customers’ buying behavior are expanding rapidly.

A year ago, if you were showing up in search engines, engaging on social media, and posting some on YouTube, you had your bases covered compared to competitors. Now? With ChatGPT, Google AI summaries, and other AI tools, zero click searches are increasing, as are the vehicles for your customers to find services like yours. And it’s getting harder to stand out from the competition.

That’s where discoverability comes in. Improving your discoverability is key to getting in front of your customers, no matter where they’re looking online. Here’s how you can use llms.txt files to make it easier for AI tools – and your customers – to find you.

Llms.txt Files & How AI Tools Represent Your Company

You’re probably familiar with robots.txt files, which tell search engine crawlers which URLs the crawler can access on your site. But how can you do the same for AI search tools?

In September 2024, a new file type was implemented for this purpose: llms.txt. This file helps large language models (LLMs) better understand what’s on your website and how to use that content when people are searching or prompting in AI tools. Think of it as a cousin to robots.txt: similar functions, but for different audiences.

AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek can use the information that you provide in your site’s llms.txt file to provide more relevant and accurate answers when people are searching topics related to your business. And in turn, that can drive traffic and engagement to your site and establish authority for you on that topic.

Llms.txt also gives you a degree of control over how these tools see and use your site. Without it, the tools can scrape your site and pull the information that it finds relevant. But with the file, you provide a summary and highlight the key areas that are most impactful for potential customers and your business.

Who’s Leading Llms.txt Adoption?

Unsurprisingly, leaders in the tech space have been early adopters of llms.txt, further cementing their investment in AI. Zapier, Stripe, UForm, Coinbase, and TipTap have are all using the file, showing the emergence of a significant trend.

More broadly, llms.txt hasn’t become an industry standard (yet), but its adoption is growing quickly. After all, it’s a strategic advantage for businesses to show up wherever their customers are trying to solve their most urgent home service or improvement needs – especially if competitors aren’t keeping up. But it’s not a set-it-and-forget-it tactic. As best practices around llms.txt evolve, it’s important for you to adapt as well to continue showing strongly in AI-generated results.

What Is Llms-full.txt ?

While llms.txt is more of a summary highlighting the key points and areas of content from your site, llms-full.txt is the entirety of your website’s content condensed into a single text file. And this type of file is starting to generate promising results. A recent study from Mintlify showed that some AI tools preferred this full version text file over the more narrow llms.txt file.

So is it better to use llms.txt or llms-full.txt ? As with most things in marketing, the answer is: it depends. Llms.txt files still generate significant visits. And some AI tools prefer the simplified file, while others favor the full one. One option is to prioritize llms.txt as a starting point (since it’s emerging more as the standard), then potentially layering on llms-full.txt to complement it.

It comes down to where your audience is, and how much you want to control what AI engines access versus showing them everything.

How to monitor your AI discoverability

How will you know if implementing llms.txt increases your discoverability in AI platforms? There are a number of ways to measure your traffic and the impact of implementing these tools. From server logs to CDN analytics to your regular analytics tools, you can dive into what user agents or AI tools are accessing your llms.txt or llms-full.txt file.

  • Check server logs (Apache, Nginx, Cloudflare, etc.) for requests to /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt.
  • Identify referrer (if any) and user-agent (e.g., GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot).
  • Compare traffic before and after adding the file.
  • If using Cloudflare, Fastly, or AWS CloudFront, set up an Edge Worker or Function to log visits to the exact file path.
  • Use CDN analytics to get frequency & unique bot visitors.

Look at these key metrics to understand performance:

  • Number of visits to llms.txt / llms-full.txt
  • Bot diversity (how many distinct AI or crawler agents are fetching it)
  • Change in visit frequency over time

Growing your discoverability in a changing buying landscape

Your customer’s buying journey is growing in complexity, and it’s important to consider llms.txt in the full context of their experience. There’s no single tactic that will be a silver bullet for your business. Rather, it’s about creating a marketing ecosystem where each tactic feeds into the success of others.

As we saw with Instagram posts becoming indexable by Google, social media can drive an improvement in organic search rankings, which in turn can influence AI platform discoverability. And listing your business on high-authority vertical directories improves your visibility in both search engines and AI platforms, while increasing direct lead generation. We’ve seen Best Pick Reports listing show prominently in ChatGPT search results and sources, lending those home service companies additional visibility and authority.

A wholistic approach to your marketing means every tactic works together to improve your performance across the board.
