Definition: Meta description is text that is placed in the code of a website rather than in the content visible to readers. The given purpose of Meta description is to provide search engines with a short description or summary of your site, which in turn is supposed to help it rank better on relevant terms. However, because of abuse by some SEOs, Meta description is given almost no weight by search engines, and using Meta description for optimization is a dated practice. Regardless, some optimization companies still tout Meta description as part of their services in an attempt to justify their expense.
